Southbound Day Trip Directions
Naran Beach, Malin Beg, Slieve League
TRÁ means beach!!
Proceed south on the Wild Atlantic Way (N-56)(Left at the mini roundabout)
Dooey Beach is after Lettermacaward - Surfers beach.
On the main N56 when arriving at the turnoff to Glenties, turn right and proceed towards Portnoo/Naran.
Proceed to Naran Beach for a beautiful stop and beach walk (small Island is accessible at low tide, check our tide clock by the front door). (Don’t forget to drive up the hill on the far side of the parking lot for a special view by the church)
At this point make a U turn and proceed back the way you drove in, towards Ardara.
Stopping points along the way: Dolman Center (newly found gold exhibit) and ecological centre. Don’t forget to ask about the Dolmen Stone - old burial ground.
Sandfield Pitch and Putt (18 holes) is on the way (Closed during the winter months)
Down the hill into Ardara (Right at the 90 degree turn at the bottom) - Heritage town. Home of local artist studio and also Malloys Tweeds.
Look for signs for Maghera (right) there is the waterfall here and further on the caves. They are only accessible when the tide is low.
On the main Ardara road take signs for Slieve League and Glencolumcille. This will take you through the Glengesh Pass. (Viewing point is located at the top, goofy selfie photo op!) This drive is spectacular and voted the most beautiful road in Ireland.
Continue on your journey towards Glencolumcille and the Folk Village. (There is a nice cafe in the Village)
From the Village, continue on the same road towards the sea and Malin Beg beach. (beautiful views and lots of sheep!)
Upon arrival at Malin Beg you can opt to climb the steps down to the beach or just take in the view.
There is only one road to Malin Beg , so at this point you must proceed back the way you came. After the Folk Village look for the right turn towards Slieve League and Carrick.
The road to Slieve League is located in the center of Carrick. There are several pubs for lunch in the town.
Proceed towards Slieve League.
Upon arrival you will find parking and facilities. At this point you may opt to hike up the road from here (45 minutes or so), however you will notice a closed gate. This gate is to keep the sheep in, it is recommended to proceed through the gate making sure to latch it closed behind you, to the upper parking area.
From there you can hike up the sea cliffs or just take in the spectacular view. (Another goofy selfie photo op!)
After you have hiked to the top…or not, proceed back the way you came to Carrick.
Continue on the WAW towards Killybegs to see the fishing port. Stop in the Bayview or Mellys Fish and Chips for the local fare.
From here continue on towards Donegal Town and look for the signs to Ardara on the left to Portnoo, Glenties, Dungloe back towards Dungloe (An Clocham Liath) (or proceed onto Sligo)
By this time you should be well traveled and ready to rest up back at The River House. Later take in the Dungloe night life.
